Weathering in the abbey

Monoprint and digital collage

I try to pinpoint my fascination with the relationship between plants and the built environment. At times its about the resilience of these overlooked and unofficial plants but in these studies I know I’m back to the idea of plants as a geological force, pushing roots into cracks or releasing acids that eventually start to break down the rock.
The production of soil and the start of life from an inanimate object. Its interesting to think about the 1000 year old abbey, destroyed during the reformation, dismantled and dispersed by the townspeople and now the remains slowly being reverted to soil.

I created this series of drawings looking to give a language to the stones and examine their relationship with the encroaching vegetation.
