River: The chalk stream is our Amazon

The chalk stream is often referred to as our Amazon, an ecosystem almost unique to England. The water is a rich biotic soup. I’m fascinated by species such as these caseless caddis fly larvae: benthic invertebrates at the lower reaches of the food chain. On the River Lark the water is regularly monitored using kick sampling methodology and this species is one of the key indicators of river health.

I intend to develop these ideas into a series of animated GIFs that can be used locally to advertise the current state of the river.
